Day 53

Wednesday, July 4 -

Happy birthday to America! You'd think celebrating the Fourth of July in England would be weird... but it wasn't!

The headlining news at work today was a woman who left the scene of an accident because she didn't want her ice cream to melt. Sounds legit. Other than that, I sat in the little lonely Eurovision room away from everything (my office) and did Eurovision most of the day. I also started working on the package that I'm making for myself, and I think it's coming along pretty well.

We had a Fourth of July lunch at work! They tried to make it American and do the whole BBQ thing, but it didn't really work out, even though at least a third of the office is American. A+ for effort though. One of the British guys getting food was saying something about Thanksgiving, so I'm not sure some of them even knew what this holiday actually celebrates.

'American' lunch, with chicken wings, some sort of macaroni and cheese casserole,  and a chicken breast. For dessert someone brought cheesecake!
In the afternoon I texted this interview with an actual crazy scientist guy, who was talking about the Higgs Boson thing. He had a strong accent, so it was hard to understand him and he was throwing out a bunch of science terms so I kept having to listen to what he was saying over and over. He was very excited about what he was talking about though.

The crazy scientist, complete with a bow tie, bald head with afro sides, and glasses worn above the eyes.
In the evening we had a class Fourth of July potluck picnic in the park! The parks don't allow barbecuing, though, so we couldn't have a traditional meal. We still had lots of food though! Watermelon, cupcakes, cookies, apple pie, chicken, tortillas (very American?), donuts, sandwiches, monkey bread, and the list goes on. The sun even came out!

Leftovers!
The highlight of the evening was when we were walking out of the park, holding American flags and all wearing red, white and blue. This other group of Americans, who looked like they were having a picnic too, yell out to us, 'America!' So we yell back at themed and we all cheered. It was cute.
